i prescribe retinol for a living. i also know exactly why you quit it
As a dermatologist, I've heard the same story for years: started strong, peeled by week two, gave up by week three. The problem was never retinol. It was the order. My eight weeks on Lamelin's retinol-bakuchiol system.
There is a drawer in almost every patient's bathroom that I have never seen but can describe perfectly. In it: one retinol, opened, used eleven times, abandoned.
When patients tell me about it, they say it like a confession. My skin couldn't handle it, doc. I'm not the retinol type.
Here's what I tell them: there is no retinol type. Retinol remains the most evidence-backed topical we have for fine lines and photoaging. What most people experienced wasn't their skin failing — it was strong actives applied to unprepared skin. Irritation, dryness, that peeling stage nobody warned them about. It even has a name: retinization. And most routines make you go through it with no support at all.
You didn't fail retinol. Your routine failed to prepare you for it.
what harsh actually means
Retinoids accelerate cell turnover. That's the benefit and the cost in one mechanism: faster renewal, but a temporarily disrupted barrier — less moisture retention, more sensitivity, visible flaking. On skin that's already compromised by over-exfoliation, heat, and our UV index, that adjustment period is exactly when people quit.
And an abandoned retinol does nothing for your skin. In my experience, the variable that predicts results isn't the percentage on the box. It's whether you're still using it in month three.
why this system, specifically
Lamelin's corrective line pairs retinol at 0.1% with bakuchiol at 0.5%. That combination is the reason I agreed to trial it. Retinol at 0.1% is a sensible, genuinely effective entry strength — not a marketing number, and not a burn-your-face number. Bakuchiol, a plant-derived compound, shows retinol-like activity in stimulating collagen with a gentler profile, so the pair works the same goal from two directions instead of doubling the irritation.
Just as important is what surrounds the actives: a calming toner before them, a hydrating gel layer that reinforces the barrier during treatment, and sunscreen written into the protocol rather than suggested as an afterthought. This is tolerance built into the routine's architecture — which is what I've been sketching on prescription pads for years.

eight weeks, on my own face
Yes, I tested it on myself. Occupational habit — I don't recommend what I haven't run.
weeks 1–2
The part I was watching for: the adjustment period. Mild dryness at the corners of my mouth for a few days — the kind you'd only notice if you were looking for it professionally, which I was. No peeling stage. The toner-and-gel buffer is doing what it's designed to do.

weeks 2–4
Texture responds first with retinoids, and it did: smoother to the touch across the forehead, makeup sitting more evenly. This matches the realistic timeline — visible refinement in the first month, not overnight.
weeks 6–8
This is where retinoid results actually live, and where most people never arrive. The fine lines at the outer corners of my eyes are visibly softer under raking light — softer, not erased; anyone promising erased is selling something else. Firmness along the jaw measurably improved. And the finding I care about most: I was still using it. Every night. Without negotiating with myself.

my professional verdict
This is a well-constructed entry into retinoids — the pairing is sensible, the strengths are honest, and the supporting steps solve the exact reason my patients quit. If your skin is already retinol-hardened on a prescription strength, this will feel conservative, and that's fine; it isn't for you. For everyone who owns that abandoned jar in the drawer: this is the version of retinol designed for you to finish.
I didn't become a dermatologist to watch people give up on the one ingredient that works. I just want you to reach week eight.

bakuchiol vs retinol — which one is doing the work?
Both, toward the same goal. Retinol drives cell turnover and collagen production through well-established pathways. Bakuchiol stimulates collagen through retinol-like activity with a gentler profile. Pairing them means correction from two directions without stacking irritation — which is why the combination exists.
will i purge?
At 0.1% with this much buffering, most users experience mild, brief dryness rather than a dramatic purge. Some flaking in the first two weeks can be normal with any retinoid. If you get persistent burning, redness, or swelling, stop and see a dermatologist — that's irritation, not purging.
i'm pregnant or breastfeeding — can i use this?
No. Retinoids are not recommended during pregnancy or breastfeeding, including over-the-counter retinol. This is standard dermatological guidance. Ask your OB or dermatologist about safe alternatives — azelaic acid and vitamin C are common ones.
can i add my exfoliating acids on top?
Please don't — at least not while adjusting. The system is already calibrated; stacking additional exfoliants is the classic way to turn a well-designed routine into irritation. Reassess after 8–12 weeks of comfortable use.
my skin is sensitive or currently irritated. can i start here?
Not yet. Correction on a compromised barrier sets you back. Restore first — that's what Protocol 3A is for — then transition here once your skin is calm, comfortable, and consistent.
